Greg Ward Jr. Signing

March 30, 2021

With the Philadelphia Eagles re-signing of WR Greg Ward, it may be fitting to discuss whether or not such a decision was necessary, or perhaps correct, given the current situation on offense.

Ward, the 5-11, 190-pound Houston graduate has been a staple in the eagle’s offense these last two seasons. Playing all 16 games in the 2020-2021 season, a total of 6 touchdowns and 419 receiving yards saw him worthy of another contract in GM Howie Roseman’s eyes. However, with the rise of Jalen Reagor, Travis Fulgham and the opportunity for a potential Top 3 Wide Receiver in this year’s draft, this signing seemingly has no positive impact: in fact, potentially detrimental.

Although with the signing of 36-year-old Joe Flacco, Ward’s career may actually flourish. For the 6 touchdowns scored by Ward last season, 4 of them were inside the opponents RedZone with the remaining 2 inside the 50. Although it may be reflective of Carson Wentzs’ terrible season, a 4.59 40 implies that he isn’t a deep threat Wide Receiver. As a result of Joe Flacco’s declining arm strength combined with Ward’s seemingly inability to present a deep threat, he may find himself rack up more TD’s in the RedZone then ever thought possible by an Eagles Wide Receiver.

Even so, it may be too early to determine Ward’s success for the 2021-2022 season. With the Draft soon approaching and free agency still well and truly thriving, we may see his career take an unfortunate turn for the worse or see him prosper in this newly styled offense.
